East of the Salton Sea. Day 2 took us along the Coachella Canal and through Glamis before heading back to Salton City.

The trees are being used to shield the track from any winds which bring up the sand storm. Looking through here, it is hard to believe that these tracks are surrounded by desert and sand dunes.

The Adobe: a building with an interesting history: during the Prohibition in the twenties, it was a drinking den; in the thirties and fourties a Brothel and in the fifties at the height of the popularity of the Salton Sea, it became a Health Spa.

Old baths - the Adobe used to be a spa in the fifties. It is quite possible that there were natural hotsprings.

A hunter had accidentaly started a fire during the time that we were at the Adobe.

Slab City Talent Show January 2012

Been a while since any blog updates, been primarily working on my Salton Sea Project and on The Book. Getting there getting there. Grant money is needed. But getting there.

But had a weekend where exploration and discovery was of main importance and that was brilliant: On the journey we went to the southern part of the Salton Sea through all the back roads, spent the night at Slab City, then went and explored sanddunes the next day before heading back. First, here are the images of Slab City. It was so much fun.

Ongoing over the summer! Also featuring Jeni Bate, an artist from Salton City and other local artists.

- The second part to my Salton Sea Project has been completed, taking portraits and doing interviews with people who live and or work at the Salton Sea. Now it is onto putting together a book, which features the Portraits and the Voices of the Salton Sea. Will keep you updated!

Southern California January 2010

Trip to Southern California: I went there to hang the Salton Sea exhibit in the La Quinta Museum (images of which are also on this site). I had the chance to visit the Salton Sea and was sad to say that quite a substantial amount of water had evaporated, so an image that I had taken in Spring 2008 of the three trees shows them surrounded by water, which was very different to what I saw this time.

Though am also happy to report that a rainstorm that happened shortly after the above image was taken, brought the levels of water back to a more acceptible level. I shall return in April to the same spot and see what has happened since.

Salton Sea, my favourite place to be.

La Quinta Cove; Old town La Quinta is surrounded by mountains on three sides;

Near Yucca Valley; got caught in a rain storm (one of many that week) trying to look at an old abandoned town; the rain makes the desert landscape turn to mud; sat in car peering out wishing it would stop momentarily and also unsure how I would make it back to town. Southern California roads are notorious for not being built for rain so mudslides and sudden floodings are quite common.

My photo exhibition in La Quinta Museum, La Quinta, California on the Salton Sea - Visions Past and Present. Here's a walkthrough. The exhibition also includes historical photographs of the Salton Sea!

The images are of three different aspects of the Sea: the Wetlands, visitors and residents of the Salton Sea, and landscapes.

The exhibition runs until the 31st of March, so if you happen to be in Southern California, stop on by. And whilst you're there, why not drive by the Salton Sea? Its not far!

Spent a weekend in Bavaria at the end of August - which is where i'm from. Hadn't been back in a few years. Forgot how pretty it is in the mountains (though still more of a desertrat) and also how much religion is intertwined in the culture and architecture.

Camp Bestival 2009!!

Camp Bestival was a real treat! It was sunny the one day miserable the next but the music rocked. Lots and lots of awesome bands and dj's and comedians - skream vs benga, roots manuva, trojan sound system, andy c, dan le sac and scroobious pip, beardyman, hayseed dixie, candi staton, greg's great 78's, frankie boyle, and more... though didn't take that many of the bands partly cause the camera kit i bought with me was intentionally not for that purpose and partly cause i was too busy dancing away and partly cause i fancied taking peopleshots instead.

Salton Sea

Over the next few weeks, I shall be putting up more of the California pictures in particular the one of the Salton Sea (which for whatever reasons haven't made it onto my website), the Mojave desert and Santa Ana, which is where I lived.

As a starter here is an image of a geo-thermal factory, harnessing the energy from underneath the earth's crust. The Imperial Valley is below sealevel and almost as low as Death Valley at about -200 feet.

With the editor of the Salton Seafarer, I went to see the aftermath of a fire which torched several of acres of the Dos Palmas grounds, making it quite a surreal and heated (literally) place to visit and photograph. Whilst in some ways reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic sceneary it was also incredibly beautiful. Not so good to be in need of breathing as every airful was filled with ash and burnt treestench.

The clouds, on the odd occassion when there were clouds over the Sea (as they tend to evaporate on the Western side of the mountains, were incredible as they wandered over the Sea, leaving behind these crazy dual landscapes, both heaven and earth meeting.

Went to visit an awesome friend of mine Helena in Stockholm for a long weekend in March.

Helena took me to a traditional Polska night, in which musicians were playing traditional Swedish folk songs and people were dancing the Polska. Helena taught me some steps. So we too were whirling round the musicians in the centre.
